Oral Appliance Therapy

American Academy of Sleep Medicine’s Practice Parameters

According to the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM), oral appliances are indicated for patients with snoring or mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) who prefer oral appliances over Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP). They are also suitable for patients with severe OSA who have difficulty tolerating CPAP, are non-compliant, or refuse CPAP therapy.

What is Oral Appliance Therapy?

Oral appliance therapy is a non-invasive, effective treatment for obstructive sleep apnea and snoring, using a custom-fabricated oral appliance that resembles a mouthguard or orthodontic retainer. The appliance fits over the upper and lower teeth and is designed with comfort and ease of use in mind.

It works by gently advancing the lower jaw forward during sleep to help maintain an open airway and prevent the tongue from collapsing backward. This improves airflow and can significantly reduce or eliminate snoring and sleep apnea symptoms.

At Midwest Dental Sleep Center, each custom-fabricated appliance is FDA-approved and specifically designed to meet the needs of the individual patient. All appliances are provided and managed by dentists who are Diplomates of the American Board of Dental Sleep Medicine (ABDSM), ensuring the highest level of clinical expertise.

Proven Process

01

Care Coordination

When you schedule your first appointment, our team handles all necessary paperwork, verifies your insurance benefits, obtains any required authorizations, and prepares a financial estimate for review during your consultation so you’ll know what to expect.

02

Consultation

During your consultation, you’ll meet with our experienced team and a board-certified dentist to review your health and treatment history, discuss oral appliance therapy, and determine your candidacy through a thorough exam and X-rays if needed. Before any treatment begins, our staff will review all financial and insurance information with you to ensure complete transparency from start to finish.
03

Digital Impressions

At Midwest Dental Sleep Center, we utilize advanced digital impression technology to obtain impressions of your upper and lower teeth, along with a bite registration. These precise impressions are essential for fabricating your custom oral appliance and can often be completed at your first visit.

04

Delivery of Your Custom Oral Appliance

At your second visit, we’ll deliver your custom oral appliance and make sure it fits comfortably. You’ll learn how to insert and remove it properly, how to clean and care for it, and how to make small adjustments over time to trial different settings. We’ll discuss what to expect and provide written and digital instructions as well as resources for continued support at home.

05

Follow-Up and Efficacy

Follow-up visits are an important part of your treatment journey. We’ll check in to discuss any changes in symptoms, review the fit and comfort of your appliance, and take measurements to track any adjustments made since delivery. We’ll answer your questions, address concerns, and order a final sleep study to evaluate how well your oral appliance is working.

06

Annual

Annual evaluations are a vital component of ongoing treatment management. Each appointment includes a comprehensive assessment of appliance fit and function, a detailed oral exam focusing on occlusion, TMJ status, and tooth mobility, as well as a thorough review of systemic health and obstructive sleep apnea or snoring symptoms.
